The match was played against Port Jackson in the leafy Sydney suburb of Turramurra. Port Jackson batted first and made 7/221 on the relatively small field.
Being the first game, the Wildfires were able to use ten bowlers.
The most successful bowler was Gil McGrath who took 2-15. Other wicket-takers were Dave Hicks, Glen Campbell, Ross Baker, Mike Byrne and Kim Taylor.
Captain Steve Walsh led from the front in the field, taking two good catches and making a stumping late after replacing Kim Taylor, who had kept very well until given an opportunity with the ball.
In reply, the Wildfires made 9/170, which was their highest score in several meetings against the strong Sydney team.
Leading run-scorers were Kim Taylor with 35, Paul Curran 30, Nev Castle 30 not out and John Haddin 24 not out.
Man of the match for the Wildfires was understandably Kim Taylor for his great all-round performance.
