The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting rainfall totals between 40 to 80 mm, and potentially up to 100 mm as the rain extends across the country.
"Being the mid-year holiday period there is the potential for a number of travellers and campers to be impacted," Bureau meteorologist Sarah Scully said.
The rainband intensified on June 26 and is expected to peak in northern WA and central Australia on June 27, crossing NSW and the east coast on June 28.
"It's going to be really steady and moderate rainfall over a number of days," Ms Scully said.
"There's already been a number of roads that have been closed through that area in anticipation of this weather system.

"And there's likely to be more travel disruptions as well."
A second burst of rainfall is also expected later in the week over northern and central Australia.
Extensive area of flood watches
Ms Scully said unseasonal river and creek flows were expected as well as localised riverine flooding in central Australia and northern WA.
Flood watches cover a large area across WA, the NT and South Australia.
In the NT rainfall totals for the week could reach 50 to 100 mm, far exceeding the June average of 5 to 20 mm.
The Gibb River Rd in northern WA is closed on June 27 between West Kimberley and the Cockburn Ranges due to flooding.
People living or travelling in the area are advised to stay up to date with the latest weather forecast and any warnings.
Showers are forecast for most of Victoria and NSW on June 28 with snowfall expected the rest of the work week.
Tasmania is also expected to receive ongoing showers particularly in western and southern areas, including possible hail on June 28.
